SQA National Units H8WV 46 - Part of Professional Development Award (PDA) in Repair and Maintenance of Traditional Masonry (2.0 Credits)

This unit is about consolidating general rubble walling, rebuilding stone replacement walling, repointing rubble and ashlar masonry and undertaking masonry repairs above eaves level.

Course Suitability

This unit is suitable for those:

✔️ With limited experience in the construction and heritage industry who wish to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the consolidation and repair of masonry buildings and structures.

✔️ With a keen interest in the care and repair of traditional buildings and have some experience of ‘wet’ trowel trades.


Course Programme

The practical experience and underpinning knowledge required for this assessment is taught on our 3 Day training course C2 Traditional Masonry Repair - Contractor Level 2.

The assessment will consist of 3 day face-to-face training of Consolidation and Repair of Masonry Structures plus your commitment of up to 2 days for self study before you sit the assessment.


Learning Outcome

On completion of this unit you will be able to:

✔️ Successfully remove defective pointing in rubble and ashlar walling

✔️ Repoint in traditional lime mortars;

✔️ Record an area of unstable masonry; and

✔️ Take down and rebuild masonry as recorded and carry out masonry repairs above eaves level

Assessment

You will be assessed through completion of ‘closed-book’ multiple choice questions and practical tasks as described above.

Upon successful completion, you will gain SCQF Level 6 – Equivalent to Higher
