- Climate change & our built heritage: Protection, Prevention & Preservation
What on earth we can do to protect our buildings?
Currently, we are all waking up to the growing realisation that our traditional building stock needs to be more resilient in defending windier and wetter conditions during the Autumn and Winter months with storms bringing in peak rainfall and flooding) and likewise the vagaries of hotter and dryer Summers.
This Masterclass showcases expert led sessions with building professionals who are stepping up the mark and making real decisions in prolonging the life of our built heritage.
Sessions include:
Peter Drummond, Architect will start with visiting the newly updated ‘Projected wind driven rain in the UK’ (November 2024) and how this will affect specifying slaterwork, flashings, rain water goods and the ‘like’.
Drew Carr, Senior Architect with John Gilbert Architects will talk us through his award winning retrofit project at Niddrie Road, Glasgow – bringing together energy saving strategies and a ‘future proofed’ tenement.
Moses Jenkins, Historic Environment Scotland , co -author with Roger Curtis for the ‘Guide to Energy Retrofit of Traditional Buildings’ will discuss practical case studies of a myriad of techniques and materials for the upgrading of historic buildings.
David Gibbon of GLM, Edinburgh will discuss mortar skew fillets and how they should be executed properly – the devil is in the detail!
Camilla Finlay, Architect and Director of Clews Architects, furnishes us with her latest work on Grade 1 listed churches and how she is endeavouring to ‘future proof’ them with more robust detailing for roof work and rainwater goods.
This Masterclass will be of great interest and use to those that are involved in building conservation, repair and maintenance of traditional buildings – be there because you care!
