This introductory course will give those who own or are responsible for a traditional building an understanding of traditional external finishes when considering the repair or reinstatement of harls and renders. The course will help attendees to identify a variety of lime render finishes and to understand the different approaches and options for repairs.The practical element of this course will cover a range of backgrounds and include undertaking small ‘patch’ repairs to existing finishes. Both hand cast and mechanical applications will be demonstrated and attendees will gain an understanding of a range of surface finishes that can be achieved. Course Suitability
This course is aimed at those who own or are responsible for a traditional building and those new to undertaking repair work to traditional masonry structures. Course Outline
- Determine background stone type and appropriate preparation requirements;
- Background Preparation including removal of cements;
- Applying harls and renders- taking into account the building details, location, exposure and environment;
- Scheduling work - season of working, choosing appropriate access and application method, scaffolding and protection regime;
- Determine application techniques by hand or mechanically, coat thickness, successful bonds between coats and ensuring flat work;
- Explore different types of surface finishes including flattened, textured and lined out finishes.
