Buildings Conservation Explained - 9.30am-12.30pm
This introduction to building conservation will take attendees through the basics of best practice and dispel the many myths that abound when working with historic buildings.
The seminar includes lively presentations of various case studies allowing attendees to grasp the rights and wrongs of historic building repair and gain an understanding of how to ‘read’ a building when approaching repairs. Planning and listed building consent issues are explained and various grant funding schemes that can enable the conservation of our built heritage are considered.
This CPD session ends with a site visit to a live building to illustrate the many issues covered within this course.
Lunch (included in the cost)
Natural Stone Replacement and Surface Repair - 1.30-4.30pm
Undertaking stone replacement without careful consideration of the composition of the existing and new stone can have costly and devastating consequences for traditional buildings. This seminar will consider the options available when stone replacement or indenting is required and attendees will gain an understanding of best practice and the analysis process in regards to specifying suitable matching stone.
Often a suitable match for existing stone isn’t available or stone replacement can prove to be out with available budgets and in these cases surface repairs can be considered as an alternative. In the past, stone repairs have received a bad name through the use of inappropriate materials and the poor execution of repairs. This seminar will discuss the case for well executed surface repairs undertaken with the correct materials to provide a low impact, low intervention solution.
Come and have a go at a surface repair yourself and see how with the right materials and techniques can equal minimum intervention and maximum conservation!
These seminars are aimed at building contractors, planners, local authority staff and recently qualified architects, surveyors and engineers as well as those working with traditional buildings including planners and other heritage professionals and students who as part of their workload are dealing with the historic built environment or those building professionals who have traditionally only dealt with new build projects but would like to gain an understanding of building conservation work.
Other sources of funding are also available.
